Introduction
Introduction of Industrial Ammonia
Industrial ammonia, commonly known as ammonia solution,is a chemical formed when ammonia(NH₃)is dissolved in water, and is widely used in a number of industrial applications. It is a colorless, transparent liquid with a strong and characteristic ammonia odor.Chemically, ammonia behaves as a weak base that reacts with acids to form salts and water. In industrial production, ammonia is mainly produced by synthesizing ammonia gas and then dissolving it in water,in which ammonia gas is usually synthesized by the Haber-Bosch method,i.e.,nitrogen and hydrogen are reacted to form ammonia gas under high temperature and high pressure under the action of a catalyst. The concentration of industrial ammonia can be adjusted according to the specific application, and common concentrations include 10%,25%,etc.
Characteristics of industrial ammonia
1、Composition:Industrial ammonia is mainly made of ammonia(NH3)dissolved in water. The content of ammonia can vary according to different industrial needs, but it is usually between 25%and 30%.
2,strong alkaline:Ammonia is a strong alkaline solution. This is because ammonia dissolved in water reacts with water molecules to form hydroxide ions(OH-),which raises the pH of the solution.
3、Corrosive:Because of its high alkalinity, industrial ammonia is corrosive to certain materials, especially copper, copper alloy and aluminum.
4、Volatility:Ammonia is volatile at room temperature, releasing ammonia gas,so it has irritating odor.
5,hygroscopicity:Ammonia has strong hygroscopicity and can absorb water from the air.
6、Coolant:In some industrial applications, such as large air conditioning systems, ammonia can be used as an effective coolant.
7、Wide range of uses:Industrial ammonia is used in a variety of industrial processes, including as a cleaning agent, acid and alkali neutralizer, and in the production of agricultural fertilizers.
Storage and Safety:Storage of industrial ammonia requires special attention to safety measures because it is corrosive and volatile. It needs to be stored in a well-ventilated environment with moderate temperature and in suitable containers. At the same time, operators need to take appropriate protective measures.
Application of industrial ammonia
1、Agriculture:In agriculture, ammonia is commonly used to prepare nitrogen fertilizers such as urea and ammonium nitrate. These fertilizers provide essential nitrogen to crops and promote plant growth.
2、Cleaning and Disinfection:Due to its alkaline and corrosive characteristics, ammonia is used as an industrial and household cleaner. It is effective in removing grease, stains and in some cases is used for disinfection.
3、Textile Industry:In the textile industry, ammonia is used to treat fibers, such as cotton and wool,to make them softer and improve dyeing quality.
4、Chemical Industry:In the chemical industry, ammonia is an important raw material for synthesizing other chemicals, such as nitric acid, amino acids, dyes and so on.
5、Oil and gas refining:In the refining process of oil and natural gas, ammonia is used to remove sulfide and acidic gases, such as hydrogen sulfide,so as to purify the fuel.
6、Pharmaceutical industry:Ammonia is used as a raw material or auxiliary substance in the pharmaceutical industry for the production of various drugs and medicines.
7、Food processing:In the food processing industry, ammonia is used as acidity regulator and pH regulator to stabilize the acid-base balance of food.
8、Environmental Engineering:In environmental engineering, ammonia is used in wastewater treatment, especially in removing heavy metals and adjusting the pH value of wastewater.
9、Cooling system:Ammonia is used as a coolant in some types of cooling systems, especially in large industrial air conditioning systems.
10、Metal processing:In the metalworking industry, ammonia is used to clean and prepare metal surfaces, removing surface oxides and grease.
